Plasticity Labs Founder and CEO Jim Moss was interviewed by Peter Goral for Journey To Success Radio.
It’s truly amazing how perspective can change everything.
Laurier student and entrepreneur, Jim Moss, learned this invaluable lesson back in 2009. One morning Jim woke up unable to use his lower limbs due to a mysterious neuromuscular disease, quickly ending his professional lacrosse career. You can only imagine how challenging this would be for your “average joe”, let alone a man who has played for Canada’s National Field & Indoor Lacrosse team for many years.
Some say that everything happens for a reason. Although Jim was not able to return to his original level of physicality, this turning point was the start of something new. The Smile Epidemic which then morphed into Plasticity Labs based in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada.
In September 2009, the Plasticity Co-Founders, Jim and Jennifer Moss, experienced a life-changing event. It was an event that set them on a path to better understand the factors behind post-traumatic stress and post-traumatic growth.
As a former pro hockey and pro lacrosse player, Jim Moss used his high-level sports psychology to overcome his potentially life-threatening, post-viral disability. Jim’s remarkable recovery was surprising to the team of Stanford doctors who cared for him. Many attributed the rapid healing to his attitude. They witnessed traits like resiliency, optimism and mindfulness in his every day acts that seemed to give momentum to his therapy. Jim said it was his sheer will to be next to his wife and current Plasticity Co-Founder, Jennifer Moss, as she gave birth to their second child. Jim made it out of the hospital just in time to be there with his wife Jennifer. And, with a renewed sense of gratitude, the couple later went on to learn as much as they could about the science of happiness and how it impacts performance in our brains.
With help from a team of seven PhDs at Wilfrid Laurier University to embed the science of flourishing with the heart of the Moss’ experience, and the power of a brilliant veteran CTO, they were able to create the Plasticity Labs technology. The entire team knows this effort to make people happier is more than a day-job; it’s the fire in our bellies that drives us. It lives behind every single aspect of the experience within Plasticity; from the interface, to the language, to the design, everything in between. What is all of this effort for? To make the app a happy place to be for everyone.
Why? Because we take happiness seriously…of course!
