I spoke at the Probus Club in Bracebridge, Ontario on August 7th, 2013.
Linda Genser, a friend of my mom (Lynda Appleby), invited me and it was truly an honor.
They offer a honorarium of $100 and I asked them to write the cheque to Mercy Ships, an organization I speak for in the Toronto area.
Bracebridge, Ontario is a beautiful town a few hours north of Toronto. It and the Muskoka region are home to many beautiful cottages owned by big names in entertainment, sports, and business.
My mom and her husband, Trevor Appleby, have a cottage there and my mom's parents also had a cottage in Muskoka that I spent summers at when I was young.
PROBUS is an association of active retirees who join together in clubs. Its basic purpose is to provide its members with regular opportunities to keep their minds active, expand their interests and to enjoy the fellowship of new friends.
If you are an active retiree, or no longer working full time, you may like to join a social club to enjoy friendship, fellowship and fun. they can offer a great avenue of interests and new horizons.
They meet the needs of retirees by providing opportunities to keep their minds active, expand their interests, stay healthy through activities, benefit from training programs, and network between like minded people and enjoy the fellowship of new friends.
They also members of the community with fresh ideas to enrich and fulfill their lives in retirement.
I love speaking to retirees because they are often the most grateful for what they have and they also know that life is challenging to many people through no fault of their own. Many of them are thinking of, and willing to, create a lifelong legacy with the money they have accumulated by investing some of it towards projects that feed and house and educate the worlds poorest people.
In 2012 I spoke to a club of Bell Canada retirees about Mercy Ships at their request. I had a lot of fun and received a very nice thank you note from them, along with a cheque for Mercy Ships.
