Al not only prepares for the programming he agrees to do, he builds relationships with the attendees and spends time with as many as possible in a one-on-one or small group setting.
Al earned his degree in Commercial Science from the University of South Carolina in 1969. After graduation, Al went to work with Economics Laboratories, a soap products manufacturer out of Minneapolis, Minnesota. He was their representative in South Carolina calling on buyers for retailers and wholesalers of their products. Within six months, he was the number one salesman in the Southeast for one of their products.
He then joined Advance Builders, Inc., a residential building and development corporation based in Columbia, with branches in Greenville, Spartanburg, Florence, Myrtle Beach, & Charleston, SC and within two years as head of sales and marketing, the firm was the highest dollar volume residential builder in South Carolina.
During that time, the president, John Ahern, encouraged Al to attend a Dale Carnegie course. With encouragement from Luther Kelly, the instructor, about half way through that fourteen week program, Al decided his future was in training and developing people. However, his father, Earby Walker, a real estate developer, asked Al to bring his skills into the family business as President of Alco Builders, Inc. During that time, Al felt the tug to get out of that business and devote all of his energy to teaching and speaking.
He joined Dale Carnegie Courses in 1975 and was the Area Manager for the central part of South Carolina. For over five years, Al sold and taught their programs throughout S.C. He quickly became one of the top-rated instructors in the organization. Al knew he wanted to start his own training business but couldn’t because of his non-compete agreement which was enforceable for two years. In 1979, Al resigned his position with Dale Carnegie and accepted a position as Vice President of Sales for Burris Construction Company, a commercial builder. In October of 1981, he left them and started his own human resource development company. Today, his articles on leadership, sales, customer service and personal development have appeared in professional publications throughout the world.
Al Walker is past president of the National Speakers Association (NSA) and is currently the Chairman of the NSA Foundation Board of Trustees. He has earned the designation of Certified Speaking Professional from NSA and his NSA colleagues inducted him into the prestigious Council of Peers Award for Excellence Speakers Hall of Fame which is the highest recognition for a professional Speaker.
