Blood, we all need it to live, the average person has about 8 pints rushing around their bodies do their work, keeping them alive. Some people have as many as 12 pints.
Blood is always in demand, no matter what the blood group. There are certain times of the year that demand goes even higher like Christmas. Blood is also in demand for patients with life threatening diseases which require blood transfusions.
Although no one wants to think about it, accidents do happen, it may be at home, it may be in the workplace or out on the street. Road Traffic accidents (RTA’s) can often result in the person losing several pints of blood, sometimes at the scene. These need to be replaced as quickly as possible. Such a small issue really, something you don’t really think about at the time, but could you imagine if the hospital ran out. I know one thing, being A+ blood group, quite a common one, I’d want to know that if I ever needed blood, then it is always available.
A healthy male can donate up to 4 times per year, and 3 times for a female, and doing so really is a simple process and takes about an hour of your time. No money, just time, it’s only an hour, to help save someone’s life.
Personally, I wish I’d have started donating earlier than 2011, I had no reason not to. I just never got round to it. Now I wish I could get them to take more blood from me each time I donate to try and make up for the lost years. It’s definitely something I’m going to do for as long as I’m medically allowed to.
I obviously not being paid for appealing, I don’t want to be either, I just want to encourage as many people as possible to make that decision, sooner rather than later don’t require a blood donation (thankfully), but there’s many that do. So if you’re healthy and well, just give an hour of your time and a pint of your blood.
I hope this message travels far and wide and if it encourages just one extra person to register and donate regularly, then I have achieved what I set out to do.
