The Boys and Girls Clubs are an amazing organization that dates back to 1860 when it was formed by 3 women from Hartford, Connecticut.
The Peel Club was formed in 1983 and I interviewed Brian Ramsingh, the club's, their Director of Resource Development for Journey To Success Radio to find out more about what they do.
The Boys and Girls Club of Peel, is a Not for Profit, Charitable Organization, that engages, supports and assist in developing youth, between the ages of 4-24, in Brampton, Mississauga and Caledon. Since 1983 our organization has provided educational based programs that support healthy, active living. Our after-school and summer programs involve hundreds of children and youth in sporting and recreational activities which promote health and fitness. Social events and workshops develop and build life skills, through interactions with families, and members of the community.
The reality for many of the communities, in which they operate programs, is that the majority of families have a household income of less than $27,000 per year. The program Staff and Volunteers are caring, compassionate mentors to our youth. These programs have been instrumental in curtailing youth involvement in high risk activities. Last year, over 70% of youth surveyed reported, that involvement with the agency’s services had a significant impact in reducing their involvement in gangs, criminal activity and drug and alcohol abuse
They have countless testimonials from young people about the positive, life altering benefits, resulting from attending programs delivered by BGC of Peel. These stories are being shared on our Social Media platform. These experiences have had a great impact on their lives and inspire new members to join our programs. An amazing statistic is that 90% of our youth leaders and volunteers, are former program members. They are currently mentoring the next generation, a process that has been ongoing since inception.
Unfortunately, demand for our services exceeds our capacity, to serve the needs of our communities. In addition, past funding cuts have resulted in program closures. The result was, hundreds of youth were left out of programs. The agency has taken a proactive approach to re- build capacity, improve systems and reach out to more families in need. BGCP is developing a broader fund development strategy to serve more children and youth. Our mission is: To provide a safe, supportive place where children and youth can experience new opportunities, overcome barriers, build positive relationships and develop confidence and skills, through educational, social and recreational programs.
