Heartland Church Fuelled by Vision Series Part 5 - I Am Doing a Great Work

Heartland Church Lead Pastor Joel Spiridigliozzo recently announced that Dr. Jim Richards would be joining the staff of the church as a Teaching Pastor. Dr. Richards preached part 5 of the 6 week series titled Fuelled by Vision. This week's sermon was titled I Am Doing a Great Work.

Below are the sermon notes given out at church.

Voice of Distraction - Nehemiah 6:1-4

When word came to Sanballat, Tobiah, Geshem the Arab and the rest of our enemies that I had rebuilt the wall and not a gap was left in it—though up to that time I had not set the doors in the gates— Sanballat and Geshem sent me this message: “Come, let us meet together in one of the villages[a] on the plain of Ono.” But they were scheming to harm me; so I sent messengers to them with this reply: “I am carrying on a great project and cannot go down. Why should the work stop while I leave it and go down to you?” Four times they sent me the same message, and each time I gave them the same answer.

In our world we need to recognize the voice of distraction that is so loudly shouting at us and then boldly affirm the significance of the work that the Lord has given to all of us.

Voice of Distraction

Some important realities about distractions:

- distractions are very personal and individual

- distractions may not start out looking bad

- the good can become the enemy of the best so the good becomes a distraction

- distractions destroy vision slowly not quickly

- the opinions of others can be a huge distraction in our world.

Compare our situation to Nehemiah's - this ministry of wall building was not nearly as great in worldy terms as his position in Babylon. Being a cupbearer was a very prestigious position involving power and trust. He had power because anyone wanting to speak to the King had to go through Nehemiah to get approval. He had the trust of the King as he was the person who tasted the food. Poisoning was the most used method of eliminating Kings back then.

Ask yourself "What are my distraction?"

Voice of Truth

"I am carrying on a great project and cannot go down."

Nehemiah was saying 'I will not listen to the voices of distraction'

Significant: Nehemiah spoke those words as an administrator/building contractor

Stephen Covey has made popular the saying "The main thing is to keep the main thing the main thing." The main things about our work for the Lord as we represent Him at home, on the job or here in His church is that we are doing something of eternal significance.

Bobby Richardson (great Yankees 2nd baseman) prayed "Dear God, your will - nothing more, nothing less, nothing else. Amen."

Whisper to yourself "I am carrying on a great project and cannot go down."
