I am a BIG fan of Judith's. She was the President and CEO of the Victorian Order of Nurses (VON).
As someone who required LOTS of home care nursing, because of my Rheumatoid Arthritis and many surgeries, I love VON home care nurses.
VON Canada is Canada's largest, national, not-for-profit, charitable home and community care organization. They have about 14,000 staff and volunteers in sites across Canada. VON has been in operation for more than 114 years.
VON offers more than 75 different home care, personal support, and community services to help patients recover from an illness or surgery in their own home.
JUDITH SHAMIAN, RN, PhD, LLD (hon), D.Sci (hon), FAAN, is president emeritous and immediate past president and CEO of the Victorian Order of Nurses (VON).
She is the immediate past president of the Canadian Nurses Association (CNA). She is also a professor at the Lawrence S. Bloomberg Faculty of Nursing at the University of Toronto, a co-investigator with the Nursing Health Services Research Unit, and was previously the executive director of the Office of Nursing Policy at Health Canada and vice-president of nursing at Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto for 10 years and has held various academic positions since 1989.
Shamian obtained her PhD from Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, Ohio, her master’s in public health from New York University, and her baccalaureate in community nursing from Concordia University in Montreal.
She is the recipient of numerous awards including:
She is also is the recipient of three honorary doctorate degrees from the University of Lethbridge, Alberta (2005), Ryerson University, Toronto (2006) and Trent University (2012).
Judith received the Centennial Award from CNA (2008), which recognizes nursing leadership over the past 100 years.
Shamian also became an International Fellow with the American Academy of Nursing in 2009.
Most recently, she received Canada’s Most Powerful Women: Top 100 award from the Women’s Executive Network.
Dr. Shamian was elected President of the International Council of Nurses (ICN)
