Judith Shamian is the President of the International Council of Nurses (ICN)and former President of the Victorian Order of Nurses (VON). She was also voted as one of Canada's 100 Most Powerful Women.

I had the pleasure of meeting Judith for lunch one day and of interviewing her for my Journey To Success Radio.

About Judith Shamian


Judith RN, PhD, LLD (hon), D.Sci (hon), FAAN, is the President Elect of the International Council of Nurses. She is also is also the past president and CEO of the Victorian Order of Nurses (VON).

She is the immediate  past president of the Canadian Nurses Association (CNA). She is also a professor at the Lawrence S. Bloomberg Faculty of Nursing at the University of Toronto, a co-investigator with the Nursing Health Services Research Unit, and waspreviously the executive director of the Office of Nursing Policy at Health Canada and vice-president of nursing at Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto for 10 years and has held various academic positions since 1989.

Shamian obtained her PhD from Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, Ohio, her master’s in public health from New York University, and her baccalaureate in community nursing from Concordia University in Montreal.

She is the recipient of numerous awards including:

  • Golden Jubilee Medal (2002) from the Governor General of Canada
  • Award of Merit (2004) from CNA and the Canadian Federation of Nurses Unions

She is also is the recipient of three  honorary doctorate degrees from the University of Lethbridge, Alberta (2005), Ryerson University, Toronto (2006) and Trent University (2012).

Judith received the Centennial Award from CNA (2008), which recognizes nursing leadership over the past 100 years.

Shamian also became an International Fellow with the American Academy of Nursing in 2009.

Most recently, she received Canada’s Most Powerful Women: Top 100 award from the Women’s Executive Network.
