Life is Good is a $100M apparel brand started in 1994 by John Jacobs and his brother Bert. I have been a big fan of, and customer, for many years.
I was blessed to interview John Jacobs for Journey To Success Radio and then, later in the day, meet him at a media event in Toronto arranged by Deb McCain Communications.
John created his first poorly spelled and crudely drawn book at the age of five. He's been writing and drawing ever since, graduating from the University of Massachusetts in 1990 with dual degrees in English and Art.
He immediately began designing and selling t-‐ shirts after college and worked as a substitute teacher to supplement his income during Life is Good's infancy.
In 1994, with a combined sum of just $78 in the bank, John and his brother, Bert, officially launched Life is Good. Today, Life is Good is a $100 million dollar clothing company with one simple, unifying mission: to spread the power of optimism.
Life is good focuses on forging meaningful, emotional connections, and relies heavily on its community of optimists to build its brand. Because Life is Good considers kids its ultimate source for inspiration, the company is committed to helping kids overcome poverty, violence, and severe medical challenges, through its nonprofit foundation, The Life is Good Playmakers. A minimum of ten percent of annual net profits is donated to the Foundation, which has raised over $11 million to date and positively impacts the lives of more than 100,000 children a day. Bert, John, and Life is Good are living proof that "Optimism can take you anywhere.”
John is the youngest of six siblings from Needham, MA. His credits his mother with teaching his brother and him to face life’s bumps in the road with a smile. The Jacobs brothers see simplicity, humility and a sense of humour, as the three keys to Life is Good's continued success.
When John is not evolving the brand for future seasons, he enjoys any game under the sun, film, music, and diving into the water to catch things. He lives in his favorite sports town, Boston, with his wife Jessica, their two sons, Oskar and Oliver, and daughter Lucy.
From Life is Good founders and brothers Bert and John Jacobs, this inspiring book of wisdom celebrates the power of optimism: the driving force behind their beloved, socially conscious clothing and lifestyle brand, now worth more than $100 million.
Following the chronology of their personal and professional journeys, Bert and John share their unique ride—from their scrappy upbringing outside Boston to the unlikely runaway success of their business. The brothers illuminate ten key "superpowers" accessible to us all: openness, courage, simplicity, humor, gratitude, fun, compassion, creativity, authenticity, and love. Their story, illustrated with the company's iconic artwork, shows how to overcome obstacles and embrace opportunities—whether it's growing stronger from rejection, letting your imagination loose, or simplifying your life to focus on what matters most.
In these colorful pages, Bert and John's plainspoken insights are paired with inspiring quotations, playful top-ten lists, deeply moving letter from the Life is Good community, and valuable takeaways from tapping the power of optimism to live your best life. Both entertaining and profound, Life is Good: The Book is the ultimate guide to embracing and growing the good in your life.
