Fredrickson's exhaustive research shows that, in order to flourish in life, we need a positive/negative ratio of at least 2.9013 to 1.

People living with less than that ratio are those who languish in life. This ratio was actually initially discovered by Marcial Losada and then proven further with tests and studies by Fredrickson and others involved in the positive psychology movement.

Here is how Fredrickson describes a flourishing life:

“Languish or flourish? Yes. Like any other living thing, you too may either languish, barely holding on to life, or flourish, becoming ripe with possibility and remarkably resilient to hard times. People who flourish function at extraordinarily high levels – both psychologically and socially. They’re not simply people who feel good. Flourishing goes beyond happiness, or satisfaction with life. True, people who flourish are happy. But that’s not the half of it. Beyond feeling good, they’re also doing good – adding value to the world. People who flourish are highly engaged with their families, work and communities. They’re driven by a sense of purpose: they know why they get up in the morning. Striving to flourish, then, is a noble goal. It’s not just about making yourself happy. It’s about doing something valuable with your day and with your life. Although flourishing is noble, it need not imply grand or grandiose actions. It simply requires transcending self-interest enough to share and celebrate goodness in others and in the natural world. Flourishing represents your best possible future. Positivity can help you get there.”

Fredrickson identifies ten forms of positive emotions: joy, gratitude, serenity, interest, hope, pride, amusement, inspiration, awe and love. Napoleon Hill, author of Think and Grow Rich, published in 1938 and one of the 50 Bestselling Books of All Time, based most of his work on the premise that God gave man 100% control over only one thing in life and that is their thoughts. Fredrickson has proved scientifically what Hill wrote about in 1938. One of 17 Principles of Success indentified by Napoleon Hill was a Positive Mental Attitude (PMA). Hill was the original proponent of the PMA movement that flourishes today in the personal development industry. When I read Positivity, and Fredrickson’s research, the thought came to me that I want to be a source of the 2.9013 positive inputs for the people I come into contact with. I want people to feel joy, love, hope, encouragement or inspiration when I am with them. I believe most people have too many of the under 2.9012/1 ratio friends and family and this makes it even more difficult to experience the proper ratio for their own lives.

I find that my deep and strong Christian faith is the biggest source and reason for the joy, gratitude, serenity, hope, pride, inspiration and love I experience in my life on a daily basis. I know that God has a plan for me. Even though I have experienced pain 24/7 for 43 years now due to rheumatoid arthritis, I have a very positive mental attitude and rejoice that the 2.9013/1 ratio comes naturally to me.
