Matters of the Heart Part 4 - A Pure Heart

Proverbs 4:23

Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.

1 Peter 1: 15-16

But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written: “Be holy, because I am holy.”

Three Biblical Stages of Holiness

1. Positional Holiness

a. The essence of the first stage of holiness isn't in the change of the behavior of the person but in the change in the Lord's mind about that person.

b. Matthew 11:28-30

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

2. Progressive Holiness

a. Progressive holiness is the lifelong process of the work of the Holy Spirit who transforms our characters into the character of Christ.

b. 1 Peter 2:2

Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation,

3. Perfect Holiness

a. This is the Christian's ultimate separation from sin, in bringing one's character into eternal relationship with Christ.

b. 1 John 3:2

Dear friends, now we are children of God, and what we will be has not yet been made known. But we know that when Christ appears, we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is.

c. Philippians 1:6

being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.

Practical Advice To A "Pure" Heart

1. "P"atrol your life

2 Corinthians 10:5

We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.

2. "U"nderstand temptation

a. Temptations are the primary reason you desire to sin.

b. Temptations are particularly dangerous when you think you can't fall.

1 Corinthians 10:12

So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don’t fall!

c. Temptations you experience are never unique but always common.

1 Corinthians 10:13

No temptation[a] has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted[b] beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted,[c] he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.

d. Temptations cannot extend beyond what you can bear.

e. Temptations are always accompanied by the Lord's way of escape.

3. "R"ead your Bible

James 1:23-25

Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like someone who looks at his face in a mirror and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. But whoever looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues in it—not forgetting what they have heard, but doing it—they will be blessed in what they do.

4. "E"scape 'from and escape 'to'

2 Timothy 2:22

Flee the evil desires of youth and pursue righteousness, faith, love and peace, along with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart.
