Sponsor Energy is an electricity and natural gas retailer that donates 50% of its margin on each unit of electricity/natural gas consumed by its customers to a local charity of that customer’s choice.
I had the honor of interviewing their Chief Operating Officer, Sander Steer for Journey To Success Radio to find out more about this amazing company.
A champion of the 3Rs (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) with over 20 years experience in energy and utilities, Sander brings strong expertise in long-term strategic planning with a string of project successes including LEED and BOMA BESt certification for many of his facilities. Prior to joining Sponsor, Sander was a Senior Director at a major Calgary based telecommunications company where he managed daily operations, major capital projects, and led design/build teams in constructing new buildings, data centres, and infrastructure.
Sponsor Energy's unique model harnesses the power of everyday consumption by splitting profits with charities based on energy consumption.
They have partnered with 50+ well respected Alberta charities dealing with social issues (poverty, homelessness, addictions) with formal profit-sharing agreements in place. They plan to roll similar partnerships in Ontario and nationally prior to launch in those markets.
They have recently been selected as a finalist (out of over 270 nominees) for the Calgary Chamber of Commerce (Business of the Year Award) for Community Impact.
They have also been recognized in several ways for our commitment to sustainability in the community, including winning the Pathways to Sustainability Award - beating out some pretty impressive contenders such as Royal Bank, Bullfrog Power, etc.
Some of the charities benefitting from their efforts are:
The Arthritis Society
Alberta Cancer Foundation
Alberta Science Network
ALS Society of Alberta
Brenda Stafford Centre
Calgary Food Bank
Calgary Meals on Wheels
