I have an active volunteer, church, social, education (reading), and business life.
I say yes to many things and no to some. I think about 3 things before I say I will do anything or commit to myself to do something.
1. The first thing I do is check my Ziglar Performance Planner.
I record all my appointments and to-do's in my Performance Planner. Although I do not record tasks like going to the gym as an appointment I will consider the tasks and appointments I have already committed to evaluate the priority of what I am considering.
I believe that anyone who is serious about getting the most from their time and their life MUST use a good time management system. I also believe that a physical planner is more effective than an online planner.
2. The next thing I do is consider whether I will do it NO MATTER WHAT. Since I refuse to use excuses like 'too tired', 'too busy', 'not feeling well', etc. to get out of what I commit to I must know 100% that I will do it. If I am not 100% sure I make it very clear that I am not committing to doing it.
This step is where you decide what type of person you are going to be and is something that many people will evaluate you on. You are either someone who does what they say they will do all the time, without excuses, or you are not.
3. The last thing I consider is whether I will do it with a positive attitude no matter what.
I have said yes to to things I should not have and did not do them with the positive attitude that I am known for. I will not commit to something I will begrudge doing.
When you are asked to do something or are considering doing something, what things do you consider before deciding to do something?
